The Lion Gate is the iconic entrance to the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae in southern Greece. Constructed around 1250 BC, this impressive entryway stands as the sole surviving monumental sculpture from the Mycenaean civilization.
The gate’s name derives from the magnificent relief sculpture that adorns the structure above the entryway. Two confronted lionesses, carved in high relief, flank a central column on a limestone slab. Though the heads of the animals are missing, their characteristic tufted tails make clear the species depicted.
This iconic image was well-known in the classical era, described by ancient authors like Pausanias. The lionesses were likely meant to serve as guardians, representing the power and authority of the Mycenaean kings who ruled from the citadel.
