Medieval Mass Grave Unearthed in Dutch Dike Reveals 20 Skeletons

A mass burial discovered in a moat in Vienna revealed approximately “prehistoric medieval” skeletons. It is believed that the remains are those of males aged between 15 to 30 who lived between the late Middle Ages and the 18th century.

A number of preserved human remains were found in a box amidst the excavation of a medieval burial in Vienna. The discovery suggests that the stacked skeletons were initially buried in an organized manner. Archaeologists from the Badein Castle, leading the research, believe that there may be more skeletal remains hidden within the area. The remains were unearthed last week on Friday, with additional skeletons confirmed by the ongoing excavation. However, archaeologists returned to the gruesome excavation site Monday to find 11 more, bringing the total to 20.

One of the archaeologists, Alderoma Christa Hendriksen, expressed astonishment at both the discovery and the fact that the corpses were heaped together.

The absence of artifacts, such as buttons or jewelry, among the remains suggests that this may have been a mass homicide, as the items usually accompany the deceased.

The skeletons were also discovered outside of Badein Castle. The structure was built in the 14th century and was originally owned by the Habsburgs.

In 1567, the castle and its surroundings were overrun by the Spanish Army. More than a century later, during the works undertaken to fortify the castle’s walls and due to financial problems, a large portion of the castle’s walls and due to financial problems, a large portion of the castle’s fortifications were partially destroyed, and it was never rebuilt.

The large keep was torn down in 1771, and the rest of the castle followed between 1828 and 1829. The only things left at present of the castle are parts of the decorative gate, called the Hof or Bosch Gate, and some connected wall parts. The former castle terrace is now built over with houses.
