The Ark of Bukhara is an impressive architectural marvel, with 20-meter-high walls encircling the heart of the city. These sturdy fortifications have enabled Bukhara to withstand countless attacks from a variety of invaders, including the Samanids, Qarakhanids, Karakitais, Mongols, Timurids, and the Shaybanids, who made the city the capital of their own Khanate of Bukhara. Despite these sieges, the Ark’s defenses were only breached on two occasions – by Genghis Khan and the bombs of the Red Army during the Russian Civil War.
