Ancient Warrior’s Skull Box with Mysterious Metal Implant Leaves Experts Astonished
According to experts’ analysis, an unusual mark on the skull box of a warrior has revealed evidence of a successful ancient surgery that took place 2,000 years ago.
The skull box, estimated to be around 2,000 years old, was discovered in Peru with a metal implant inserted into a fractured area.
The information was provided by the Osteology Museum in Oklahoma, United States. Experts believe that this warrior suffered a skull fracture during a battle, and the ancient physicians of that time used a metal implant to repair the damage.

Sharing their insights with the Daily Star, experts suggest that the man survived the surgical procedure. The skull box now stands as a significant piece of evidence demonstrating the advanced surgical capabilities of ancient civilizations.
“This elongated skull box is a characteristic feature of the Peruvian people. The remarkable aspect of this skull box is the presence of the metal implant. This warrior sustained a head injury during a battle 2,000 years ago. It is one of the oldest and most intriguing skull boxes in our collection,” stated a representative from the Osteology Museum.
Initially, the skull box was held in the private collection of the Osteology Museum but later gained prominence. In 2020, it was publicly displayed for the first time.

Although there is no new information about this particular skull box, experts speculate that the injury may have been caused by a rubber bullet during the battle.
It is known that ancient Peruvians practiced bodily modifications, including intentional deformation of the infant’s skull by binding it with fabric or using wooden splints shortly after birth. In the region where this skull box was discovered, there is a long-standing tradition of skilled surgeons who developed complex procedures to treat skull fractures.
Thousands of years ago, Peruvian physicians would create small holes in the injured person’s skull box. Whether they used anesthesia or not remains a mystery.
“They knew early on that this was a life-saving technique. We have evidence that trepanation surgery was not related to ritualistic activities but was often performed on severely head-injured patients resulting in skull fractures,” shared John Verano, an anthropologist from Tulane University, who expressed this viewpoint in National Geographic in 2016.
The exact composition of the metal implant attached to the skull box remains unknown. “Typically, gold or silver was used for these types of surgical procedures,” added the representative from the Osteology Museum.
